Fishing is defiantly hot for this time of year here in Seward. Big fish have been hitting the dock daily and things are looking good for some heavy hitters in this years Halibut Derby.
While traveling out in the gulf we came across a pinnacle that we’ve never fished before. We dropped our anchor, baited the hooks and literally within minutes we hit our first fish. It grabbed the 12oz swim bait jig hard and took more than 1/2 hour to reel this pig in. We thought we had something in the three hundred pound range by the way she was fighting. It took three of our fisherman to get this one to the top. The harpoon was prepped and I loaded the gun. As the fish came up we could see that she was hooked in the middle of the back. This always makes the fish seem much bigger than they actually are. None the less this Halibut weighed in at the dock at 168 pounds. The biggest for the year here in Seward.
We fished the spot for another hour or so catching another in the 80lbs range and another about 30lbs. Swells were starting to pick and we were starting to lose fisherman so it was time to target some smaller Halibut and get back to the dock. We loaded the boat up by 2:30 and made way towards the barn.
Too bad this fish couldn’t wait another day to be caught considering the derby starts in the am. However, It’s better to be a day early than a day late. FISH ON!
