Big 'Buts, Lings, and Kings; a few of my favorite things- July 25, 2014

Where to begin, ok how about with a 100 pound halibut caught on the jig within the first 3 minutes of dropping the anchor.  We had an amazing day on the Sea Quest filled with non-stop action and giant fish.  The tide this morning was a strong incoming and although our first stop produced only 1 fish, it was a good one.  At about 11am the current was starting to switch a bit earlier than expected so we set up a few miles away to await the outgoing tide.  At first we caught a few small chicken Halibut but as the boat swung and started to face the shelf Lingcod after Lingcod kept hitting the jigs.  We landed 11 big lings total and threw only one small one back.  Throughout the course of 3 hours, we brought in 3 Halibut over 100lbs, one at 80lbs, 3 King Salmon, 11 big Lings, 16 Silver Salmon and a limit of over and under 29" Halibut.  When we hit the dock our total catch weighed out to 482lbs of fillets. Looks like the freezers are stocked.

There are going to be some sore arms tomorrow, it seemed as if everyone got a chance of reeling in a fish of size today.  This was probably our most fun trip of the year!  With constant action and a total mixed variety of fish landed every five minutes, I think everyone on the boat can agree that this was one for the memory bank.  Montague Island has been producing some great fish this last week and the tides are looking better and better every day.  I'm looking forward to the next couple weeks as we enter into August.  August has always been a stellar month for me since every fish I've caught over 200lbs has been in the tail end of the season.  I really hope that we keep this momentum up throughout the rest of the summer.

The weather prediction for tomorrow is North wind 10 KT, Seas 2'
Let's hope we are as fortunate tomorrow as we were today.  FISH ON!

One Happy Crew!
